Salmon fishing
The salmon (salmon, sea-trout, arctic char) season in Norway normally runs from June 1st till August 31st with some variations due to regional and local conditions, i.e. from May 15th till September 30th. The main salmon runs are normally from mid-summer (June 20th till July 20th) although the big salmon arrive in late May and early June. Good grilse runs take place in July. Fishing in August can also be very rewarding as salmon start settling down to spawn and good numbers of big cock salmon also arrive in August. In most rivers the sea-trout start emerging at the end of July or early August and fishing normally continue to the end of the season. Arctic char has a similar pattern as the sea trout.
Game fishing
Game fishing can practically take place all year round in Norway, although the main season is from May till October. The season last from the time of year when the ice goes from river, lakes and tarns until the ‘big freeze’ starts in November/December. However, during the months of January to March, so-called ‘ice-fishing’ has become very popular in most parts of the country and reports of 8 – 10 kilos (17 – 22 lb) brown trout is not uncommon.
